My eyes already opened for one hour and forty minutes after having a short nap in the night. I still sleepy but my spirit to stay wake up endures me from fall asleep again. To refresh my eyes, I drank 2 mug of fresh milk, the in-the-refrigerator one. What a good feeling i have...
One of the main issues in our country today is about the swine flu, or it is called as H1N1. This flu already infected 2 of Malaysian who just came back from US through the airplane, and we know that this infection can kill. What should we do? Just watch and evade the virus if it come to us like Jackie Chan flees when Jet Li strikes him in the movie?
No, not like that. These are the precautions that we can take;
Understand what the Flu is about.
Its a Viral Infection which can Kill. Being a Viral infection, antibiotics which are anti-bacterial will not help. Bacteria live on their own as a cell and antibiotics can kill the bacteria. Viruses live by infecting a living cell hence killing off a virus is not as simple. Basically, you then need antivirals to kill viruses. However, since viruses change so frequently it is not necessarily effective against all viruses. (including H1N1 flu).
Yes H1N1 can kill, more so if the person is already ill to begin with. As of yet, the very young and the very old would be susceptible to H1N1 but considering the pattern of transmission at the moment, it has hit mostly travelers. There has also been rather good containment of flu patients as everyone has had good practice with SARS.
Protecting yourself from H1N1.
A maintenance of a high level of hygiene. For Office workers, who constantly find themselves in crowds of travelers from around the world, it is prudent to have sanitizing hand rubs at the entrance of the workplace. Hands are everywhere, touching everything including your own face. Sanitizing hand rubs containing alcohol, or frequent hand washing is really a great step in the prevention of getting the flu, even if it isn't H1N1.
Masks like the N95 masks are also useful in preventing inhalation of droplets of a nearby sneeze. They are EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE to wear. It is suggested that we wear the N95 mask when in public places such as airports, train stations, bus stations and general public places. Whats the lifespan of the N95 mask? This is a debatable issue but generally, the recommendation goes like this. Dispose of the N95 at every change of environment is of course the best recommendation. If you are only using the N95 mask in 1 environment, the general consensus is to change the mask when there is a suspected case in the midst has been contained. Otherwise, the N95 mask can be changed when it is visibly soiled or has gotten wet from all your exhalation vapors. Once the Mask is wet, its efficiency is compromised. N99 masks are even more difficult to wear for long durations, so its not so frequently used.
[Wear this all the time?]
Staying at home when you are ill is great for the rest of your colleagues. One blast from your sneeze and you could be spreading your flu to the rest. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze will definitely decrease spread of your virus, H1N1 or not.Hepa Filters at the office are great if your boss is a philanthropist. (
for people who works)
Restriction of Unnecessary Travel. Travel is by far the biggest contributor for the spread of a worldwide pandemic. This is a rather bad time for holidays. So stay at home with your Playstation and your XBox 360 if you've been slotted for vacation time.
Source: http://asia.cnet.comIts better to prevent than cure. The easiest step is to stay at home. Do this means that we can stay at home, no need to go to classes even though we are healthy? Huhu... I wonder...
Oh, before I forget, happy belated birthday to my 'old' friend, Yan... Her birthday was on last Sunday.Prevention is better than cure...
